NVIDIA driver update failed: recover the installation safely

Start with the failure you can observe. A corrupted download, a busy Windows installer, an NVIDIA App failure, and a regression after installation need different next steps.

Try the bounded recovery sequence

  1. Save your work, finish any active Windows Update, and reboot.
  2. Confirm the exact GPU, Windows version, and desktop or notebook context. For a notebook, check the manufacturer's driver guidance before replacing an OEM-qualified package.
  3. Download the matching package from NVIDIA's official driver page. Do not use a third-party driver download site.
  4. Close browsers, video players, games, GPU monitoring or tuning tools, and other GPU-accelerated applications.
  5. Run the installer as administrator. If an ordinary retry fails, choose Custom (Advanced) and Perform a clean installation.
  6. Reboot after installation, then confirm the driver version and test the affected application.

Roll back only after a regression

Rollback applies when a newer driver installed and the problem began afterward; it is not the remedy for a package that never installed. Microsoft documents rollback in Device Manager under the display adapter's Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver. Administrator access is required, and Windows may ask for another restart.

Before rolling back, check the dated issue ledger and the exact NVIDIA release notes. A fixed-in claim for one driver family or platform does not automatically apply to another.

Stop repeating the installer when evidence is missing

If the same failure returns after one reboot and one source-matched manual clean-install attempt, collect the installer evidence instead of cycling through registry edits or third-party cleanup tools. NVIDIA documents how to enable full installer logging and where the graphics-driver logs are written. Disable diagnostic logging after reproducing the failure, then provide the logs through NVIDIA's support or feedback path.

Stop sooner if the machine is managed, BitLocker or Secure Boot recovery is involved, the GPU is not detected, Device Manager reports a hardware error, or you cannot confirm the correct OEM package. Use the system administrator, notebook manufacturer, or NVIDIA support route for that machine.
